Reviews

Sometimes you discover a band which instantly makes you wonder why not everybody has heard of them yet, this I had when I first heard Sutrastore. Catchy pop-like triphop accompanied by the wonderful vocals of both Kaat Arnaert as Patrick Cherchye. Pure and clear, that is what the songs of this Belgian company sound like. They float between sweat soft clouds and cloudbursts of electronically melodies. With “Love Evolution 1.0” the band then really hit the bullseye, it is nicely produced but doesn’t sound overdone.

The openings song on the album “Riot” swings and seduces you to sing along. With “time” everything around you will fade as soon as you hear the embracing vocals of Kaat, it’s a nice experience to hear a voice rise above the music without dominating the other instruments. I find it so hard to just describe a few songs on the album that I am going to go through all six of them here. Number three, “Succeed” is a cute ballad that doesn’t become sticky. “Lotus” sounds just slightly jazzy because of the swinging bass run and is easy to listen to after which you are surprised with “Clouds” containing something like disguised folk but then again, maybe it doesn’t. “Ifuwannitoo”, the last song dreamily closes the “Love Evolution 1.0” as an airy lullaby for baby’s.

The only bad thing about this album is obviously that it is too short. An ideal cd to play when you are looking forward to a romantic evening.

------------------------------------

Six track EP of the wonderful Sutrastore with brilliant arrangements and production, published by the AKH label . Most of all these tunes are timeless pop pearls, very mainstreamy, but never cheesy or too superficial, always sporting taste and a will for perfectionism, that often enough reminds me of long forgotten legends like Fairport Convention. Just without the gospel appeal. Sometimes it's really cool to not be hip and fresh, but just care for intriguingly good music.
